PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The National Intrepid Center of Excellence was created by the Department of Defense to respond to the growing needs of those who experience traumatic brain injury and psychological health conditions. The planning and design of the center began in early 2008, with construction completed in June 2010.
The project included clinics, imaging facilities, spaces for physical therapy, outdoor rehabilitation and virtual-reality-assisted rehab, offices, an auditorium, a patient lounge and coffee bar and a multi-purpose space with a skylight.
With the economic downturn immediately following the start of the project, we were tasked with maintaining the state-of-the-art design and keeping costs within a target budget that was cut by 15 percent. Through innovative thinking in the programming of the building, value engineering virtually every major system and working closely with contractors and subcontractors to reduce risk and optimize efficiency, we were able to deliver the project on time and under the revised budget with LEED Silver certification.
